Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts is the fourth Roberts generation living in Atlanta, beginning with her farmer great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts. She inherited her father's interest in theater from a young stage. When he was a student of Emory University, he performed in a variety of productions in Atlanta. He joined the air force in 1953 and, while being stationed at Biloxi Mississippi was cast in an army production that featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was as well in the air force. In 1955, they got married and, in 1956, their son Eric Anthony was born. The couple divorced in 1957. the air force and Walter began his studies in Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. In 1960, the family relocated into Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter and Betty Lou financed their own production of a Sunday morning show for children, Bum Bum and His Buddies. They also founded the Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year, which was in operation for a period of about six years. The couple had another two children. Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also known by the name Lisa) as well as Julia Billingsley (1967) (also also known by the name Julie).
